Critical test today for flexible work schedules
A Cal Chamber-sponsored bill to allow employees and employers flexibility in work scheduling is being considered today by the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee. AB 2127 would allow a small employer to agree to an employee’s request to work an alternative work schedule. This Small Business Family Scheduling Option would add a much-needed boost for employers struggling to find qualified employees in a shrinking pool of candidates. Under current law, employers may institute alternative work schedules only if a supermajority of affected employees agrees to the arrangement by secret ballot. Then, all employees in the work unit are subject to alternative scheduling. Click here to see how you can help.
Landmark downtown building to change hands
The beautiful Wickenden building that formerly housed Johnson’s for Children is in escrow. The buyer: Copeland Properties, as we predicted two weeks ago. Although much of the building is now vacant, some of the tenants are nervous about the ownership change; the building needs extensive earthquake retrofitting and they’re not sure when, or if, they’ll have to vacate. The building was owned for decades by longtime local financier Jay Stream, who died last year.
Council rejects a really bad idea for new signs
Several years ago, in the FY 2003-05 Financial Plan, the City Council approved of the idea of a Parking Guidance System to help motorists find available parking. Sounds like a good idea. But, as always, the devil is in the details. Last week, staff came forward with a recommendation to spend $200,000 on some very high tech and very ugly electronic signs almost guaranteed to single-handedly ruin San Luis Obispo’s quaint, historic small-town image. Is this the same City that thinks we should always be focused on preserving our special “sense of place?” Wisely, the Council delayed a decision. Judge for yourself whether these signs would enhance the downtown experience for visitors or residents. Let the council know how you feel. Click here for Council's contact information.
