TV spots, ads help produce support for farmers
More than 100 people filled the City Council chambers last night to voice their opinions on who should run the fresh produce section of the Thursday night Farmers Market organized by the Downtown Association (DA). Insiders report that the television spots and full-page print ads that ran in the week leading up to council meeting were financed by a local rancher-developer who has previously sparred with the DA. The publicity helped drum up significant public testimony, written communications and phone calls that were overwhelmingly in support of the San Luis Obispo County Farmers' Market Association continuing its 27-year role. While there are financial considerations on both sides, a relationship breakdown between the two organizations appears to be at the heart of the issue. The two sides will continue to work toward better understanding next Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 a.m. in the City Council hearing room in an open meeting hosted by the DA.

Avila Beach scores scene in Super Bowl spot
Local Super Bowl viewers may see some familiar scenery in a commercial this Sunday. That’s because it was filmed in Avila Beach last fall. Bridgestone Tire’s “Whale of a Tale” commercial features a curvy Avila Beach road, the Avila Beach pier, three young men and a whale in a truck. Click here for a sneak peek.

Need a last-minute gift before flying out?
Passengers flying out of the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport will soon be able to purchase a bottle of wine at the airport’s gift shop. The Runway Express Snack Bar and Gift Shop recently obtained a wine license enabling the sale of unopened wine as a gift item, and insiders say it will feature wine from San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles vintners within a few weeks. The Runway Express is located in the airport’s terminal lobby to the right of the entrance doors. The gift shop currently offers periodicals, Souvenir items and more.
