Chamber positions on 2008 state propositions
With Election Day fast approaching and early voting taking
place now, we’d like to remind you of the positions the SLO
Chamber has taken on three state propositions.
Each election cycle, chamber committees are assigned to review
each of the measures before state voters, taking into consideration the
impact it might have on residents and businesses locally. The chamber
board of directors determines whether the chamber should take a
position and what it should be, based on recommendations from the
committees. The chamber does not make candidate endorsements.
This fall, the chamber took positions on three propositions,
detailed below.
Proposition
| Chamber
position | Reason | Others
who hold same position
| |
Proposition 7
Renewable energy generation | No | The Chamber
strongly favors alternative energy. However, this flawed measure, which
mandates that 50 percent of all power generation must come from
alternative sources by 2025, excludes most
smaller energy producers. It will actually work against the development
of the renewable energy industry. |

Eliminates right of same sex couples to marry | No | Proposition 8 is
not consistent with the Chamber’s core values of diversity
and inclusiveness, which are good for business and a vital business
community. |

Proposition 11
Redistricting | Yes | The Chamber has
long believed that the practice of allowing lawmakers to draw their own
“safe” districts is a major cause of the
dysfunction in Sacramento. This measure is one way to have competitive
districts that encourage dialogue, consensus building and practical
solutions to problems. |
