Shedding some light

A couple of solar energy projects proposed for San Luis Obispo County are generating much discussion. Two companies have plans to build solar farms on the Carrisa Plains. Peter Schwartz, a Cal Poly physics professor and expert in renewable energy technology, has conducted research on solar energy and will provide some insight about what solar farms could mean for the county.

Small mussels, big problem

Some tiny invaders have changed things for boaters at the county’s lakes. Fears that mussels attached to boats entering Santa Margarita and Lopez lakes could contaminate the reservoirs prompted the County Parks department to enact emergency measures in April. Parks director Pete Jenny will talk about what his department is doing and provide a prognosis.

Up in the air

That San Luis Obispo’s regional airport faces uncertainty on the eve of Klassje Nairne’s retirement as its manager is ironic. Nairne has always provided a steady hand in guiding the airport and her tenure has been marked by success. She’ll be here to discuss recent changes at the airport and her retirement plans.

Speaking of leaders

Giving a speech to a crowded room typically sets the nerves of most high school students on edge. Caitlin Lewis, however, isn’t like most high school students. Lewis, who’s entering her senior year at San Luis Obispo High, is a state champion in prepared public speaking and is headed this fall to a national competition. She’ll talk about her experiences and the role FFA has played in her development.

Two Tough Twins

Ever wonder what it’s like to go bicep-to-bicep with someone named “Crush?” Los Osos twins Clinessa Burch and Lillian Thomasson recently proved their mettle on the NBC show “American Gladiators.” The 27-year-old sisters, who attended San Luis Obispo High, will give us a behind-the-scenes look at their experiences on the popular show.

“Thoroughly” entertaining

Sit back and enjoy a sampling from Sorcerer Production’s staging of the Tony award-winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” The production is wrapping up its engagement at the Clark Center with performances Thursday through Sunday.

A Boulder blueprint

Last month’s Chamber-sponsored trip to Boulder, Colorado exceeded expectations, with a group of about two dozen leaders representing City and County government, Cal Poly and the business community returning ready to pursue some innovative economic development ideas. We’ll get an overview of the trip and what we can learn from Boulder.
