Project Waterbag

Tricia Compas’ Polytech Waterbags will revolutionize disaster relief efforts and quell the spread of water-borne diseases. That’s what the Clinton Global Initiative, founded by Bill Clinton, said in selecting the Cal Poly student for its Outstanding Commitment Award grant. Compas will talk about the award and how she’s working with the CDC and Red Cross to get her water filtration systems to disaster zones by the end of next year.

Sunny “D”

Vitamin D – not even a true vitamin – was long neglected in the halls of medicine. But now there’s research indicating that a deficiency of Vitamin D – which we absorb from sunlight – may be associated with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, the flu and many other health concerns. Local chiropractor Karen Krahl and obstetrician Karen Goodrich will tell you what you need to know.

MindBody over matter

It started in Rick Stollmeyer’s garage and grew into MINDBODY, a web-based business management system aimed at the fitness and spa market that has seen a 425 percent increase in sales since 2004. Inc. magazine recently ranked MindBody the 59th fastest-growing software company in the country. Stollmeyer explains his journey.

Lights, Camera, Action News

Evan Pappas, the president and general manager of KSBY since April, takes you behind the scenes at the television station. Pappas, who has worked in Tucsan, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami and Austin, Texas, will share his perspective on the intertwined world of news, information and entertainment and how he sees media shifting.

Festive feasts

Feeling bewildered about what to serve guests this fast-approaching holiday season? Let Maegen Loring, the renowned chef at the Park Restaurant, be your guide. Loring, whose seasonal menus have a global influence with local ingredients, will provide ideas for wine and food pairings that are sure to please any crowd.

Going Green

Erik Justesen, CEO of RRM Design Group and chair of the SLO Chamber’s Sustainability and Resources Committee, will recognize the six winners of the inaugural San Luis Obispo County Green Awards, selected from more than 50 nominations for steps they have taken to make their operations more environmentally friendly.

In four parts

A traditional barbershop quartet with singers from the Gold Coast Barbershop Chorus will bring their four-part harmonies – lead, tenor, bass and baritone – to holiday standards in a performance bound to stir up nostalgia among young and old alike.

“hell on earth…”

More than 1,000 homes in Southern California have been destroyed by one of the worst series of wildfires in state history. SLO Fire Chief John Callahan spent most of his career in top management of the L.A. Fire Department so he knows about fire risk and what can be done about it. Could this happen again in SLO?
