A stronger foundation to grow from
Many of us know about the physical change the SLO County Community Foundation made last year when it moved into its new permanent home by securing funds to purchase the historic Barneberg House on Dana Street in San Luis Obispo. But the relocation was far from the only change the organization had on its horizon. Executive Director Barry VanderKelen will be here to give us an update on some of the changes happening at SLOCCF and how the changes will support the community as a whole. |

How ‘learn by doing’ engineers success
Cal Poly is often touted for its strong and well-regarded College of Engineering which ranks among the best in the United States. What does it take to be the best? With approximately 5,000 students, 13 degree programs and more than 80 laboratories, the ‘Learn by Doing’ philosophy is a key to its success. Recently hired Dean Debra Larson will share with us how Cal Poly’s legendary philosophy is used throughout the curriculum to ensure success in the workforce. |

New year, new laws
With each new year comes new employment laws. One of the most significant changes for 2012 is a rule that requires every business to post information on union rights. This is a major shift expected to affect more small and medium-sized businesses. Dave Juhnke, managing partner at Sinsheimer Juhnke Lebens & McIvor, LLP will be here to give us the highlights of what businesses need to know about this change.

Most people probably don’t think twice about the science behind modern medicines, but for local resident Ann Dover it is her business. Dover owns a local company that handles clinical trials with control groups for drug companies all over the world. Hear from Dover what it is like to be in such a specialized business on a global level. |
