Secrets to success

When a business thrives in a down economy we all want to know what their secret to success is. Tolosa Press had their best year in business last year. Chris Gardner, editor of Tolosa Press and SLO City News, will share with us how his company made key changes and strategic business decisions to set themselves apart from their competition. Chris will also share lessons he learned through the process that can be applied to other small businesses.

Impacts on county jail

With the recent state budget cuts many organizations and programs in San Luis Obispo County are feeling the effects. The San Luis Obispo County jail is one organization that is not only feeling the budget cuts but is feeling the impacts of other changes imposed on them from the new budget. Sherriff Ian Parkinson is now working on planning for how to deal with managing more inmates at a county level instead of sending them off to a state jail. Parkinson will be here to share with us what these impacts mean to our county and how they are prepared to deal with them.

Protecting our Parks

The American Land Conservancy has been working to protect the 2,400-acre Wild Cherry Canyon, near pristine coastal property northwest of the town of Avila Beach, that would become part of Montana de Oro State Park. Kara Blakeslee will give us an update on the project and when we should expect the land to be incorporated into the ALC’s West Coast Trail program and open to the public.

Harvest is almost here

This year Talley Vineyards is celebrating 25 years of making San Luis Obispo wines. But their accomplishments, just like many others county wineries, have not come without constant challenges—from unpredictable weather, challenging economic times, and changing industry practices. Talley Winemaker, Eric Johnson, will give us an update on what we should expect from this year’s harvest throughout San Luis Obispo County and what to look forward to in the years ahead from Talley.

Open for Business in SLO

Business people who live or work in San Luis Obispo are already familiar with our talented workforce, our entrepreneurial culture and our superior quality of life. In an effort to cohesively share this story, the City of SLO and the Chamber have partnered on a new economic development resource website intended to help business people who are looking to start, expand or relocate their business. The site is  intended to showcase our region’s lifestyle assets, connect them with our business successes and then provide the resources for success. Come learn more about the website and how local businesses can utilize it.

SLO on the run

Next April, San Luis Obispo will play host to its inaugural marathon featuring a full 26.2 mile course run and a half marathon. Heather Hellman of Get Off The Couch Potato Sports Productions LLC will be here to tell us why SLO is suitable for a marathon and the strong economic impacts marathons can have on a community.

Plein Air comes to GMSLO

Fifty of the nation’s top plein air artists are selected to visit San Luis Obispo every fall to paint the landscapes of our county during the SLO Museum of Art’s Plein Air Festival. Get a sneak peak of what this week-long festival is like when local artist John Barnard joins us at GMSLO to do a ‘quick draw’ much like the festival’s Saturday event in the plaza.
